Assistant Doctors and Senior Registrars

The Anaesthesiology and Resucitation Department is accredited to provide 3 1/2 years of post-graduate training (category A1). There are 9 assistant positions and 3 senior registrar positions.

As a rule, we admit a maximum of 2 beginner assistants per year for a minimum period of 2 years. These assistants soon take part in all the medical activities of the department. During the first year, they are supervised by a consultant or by a senior registrar; later on, they become more and more independent and can manage small anaesthesia procedures alone. After this period, and subject to them fulfilling the criteria for continuing training, the Department will discuss a career plan with them. A training internship in an A1 category training centre will be planned.

Two internship positions are reserved for assistants who are coming to the end of their training. The minimum period of commitment is 1 year, but ideally 1½ or 2 years are necessary for integration and to get the most out of the training options on offer. The aim for an advanced assistant is to expand his/her practical knowledge in all fields of anaesthesiology, to acquire the greatest possible autonomy and to pass his/her theoretical FMH examination. This is an excellent position as an external year before becoming a senior registrar in our department or in a university hospital. Should they wish to do so, candidates also have the option of studying a field of anaesthesia in greater depth, such as cardiac anaesthesia, paediatrics, US-guided locoregional anaesthesia, etc.

If they have committed for over a year, assistants have the option of taking part in a 3 or 6-month rota in intensive care.

The three positions as senior registrar are organised as follows: one position for a duration of 1 to 2 years and two positions for a longer period. The senior registrar works independently, under the responsibility of a consultant. He/she also performs some administrative duties and coaches the assistants. He/she actively takes part in in-house on-call duties as soon as he/she is independent enough.

For all doctors, we support their participation in working with Air-Glaciers.

Working within the SAR

Assistants and senior registrars are subject to labour laws. We comply with the limit of 50 weekly working hours, usually distributed over a month. As a rule, each assistant doctor has one day on-call and one day of UEP (‘Unité d’évaluation préopératoire’ = Pre-Operation Evaluation Unit) per week. Generally, this involves 4 nights on-call per month. On other days, assistant doctors are involved in the elective surgical programme. In order to take advantage of the specific features of the different sites, they can do service in both the Sierre and Martigny hospitals.

Each assistant and senior registrar is required to actively participate in internal symposia. This may mean presenting a short topic in anaesthetics, or contributing to a club journal.

Feedback from our Assistants

  • 1st and 2nd year of training

In the DAR, we are taken on by 12 different registrars. This variety can be confusing at first. However, you quickly realise the huge benefits which allow us to learn very varied anaesthetic strategies.

I also recommend you visit the following sites: 4 Vallées , Les Bains de Saillon

  • 4th year of training

In the DAR, I learned to do complicated things in an easy way!
I was given a very warm welcome by my colleagues from the ‘Bas-Valais’, despite the ‘Röstigraben’!

The most beautiful region in Valais is where I come from: The Lötschenpass

  • 1st and 2nd year of training

Although this is not a university hospital, the critical mass and diversity of conditions you come across are impressive. During my time in Sion, I practised anaesthetics in all fields: gynaecology, general surgery, thoracic surgery, cardiac surgery, paediatric surgery, ENT...
